The letter urged Obama to "fulfill the pledge you made earlier this year to reconstitute the board and accelerate the selection process of its members."

A fully engaged and independent privacy panel in the Executive Branch is particularly important as Congress works on reauthorizing expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act and other issues, they wrote. Their message followed a similar effort in April by Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy and Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., who called the board "a critical government component" vital to "ushering in a new era of responsibility."
