Nearly 100 Internet service providers, backbone providers, content providers, consumer groups, commercial groups, and end-user organizations have joined forces to form the Broadband for America coalition with the goal of getting broadband access to every household and business in the nation. The major thrust of the effort will be to find ways for the private, non-profit, and government sectors to work as a coordinated team leading the development and implementation of a national broadband strategy.
The coalition's launch comes as the FCC prepares a national broadband plan to be presented to Congress in February and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration is on the hook to help distribute $7.2 billion in broadband stimulus funds. The group's first order of business is an ad campaign -- a pair of 30-second spots that will run in the D.C. area. The coalition's diverse membership includes tech and telecom giants as well as groups not typically associated with Internet issues like the Jewish Energy Project and Livestock Marketing Association.
