            <title>Senate Panel To Probe Newspapers&apos; Fate</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="newspaper.jpg" src="http://techdailydose.nationaljournal.com/newspaper.jpg" width="250" height="173" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /></span>Google Vice President <strong>Marissa Mayer</strong> and HuffingtonPost.com co-founder <strong>Arianna Huffington</strong> are among seven witnesses scheduled to testify Wednesday before the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, which is holding a hearing to examine the future of newspapers during turbulent economic times. Hearing details were announced Monday as news surfaced that the New York Times Co. had reached a tentative deal with unions at the <em>Boston Globe</em>, and would hold off on its threat to shut the Globe down. Sen. <strong>John Kerry</strong>, D-Mass., will chair the hearing. Other witnesses include Sen. <strong>Ben Cardin</strong>, D-Md.; Knight Foundation President <strong>Albert Ibarguen</strong>; former <em>Baltimore Sun</em> reporter <strong>David Simon</strong>; former <em>Washington Post</em> managing editor <strong>Steve Coll</strong>; and D<em>allas Morning News</em> CEO <strong>James Moroney</strong>. The hearing follows one held last month by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts and Competition Policy called "<a href="http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/hear_090421.html">A New Age for Newspapers: Diversity of Voices, Competition and the Internet</a>."</p>]]></description>
