House Patent Hearing Witnesses Unveiled

April 29, 2009

The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday evening formally announced the witness list for its first hearing of the 111th Congress to discuss potential changes to the U.S. patent system. The hearing takes place Thursday morning and the line up includes:

Intel Chief Patent Counsel David Simon
Georgetown University Law School Professor John Thomas
Segway inventor Dean Kamen
Tessera General Counsel Bernard Cassidy
Johnson & Johnson Chief Intellectual Property Counsel Phillip Johnson
Vertical Group Partner Jack Lasersohn
Cisco Systems Senior Vice President Mark Chandler

House Minority Leader John Boehner and some other top Republicans weighed in on the patent debate on the eve of the hearing with a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The communique from the House Republican High-Tech Working Group, which was signed by more than 20 members, pressed for patent reform but did not mention Conyers' bill by name. A Boehner spokesman said his boss "has never been opposed to all patent reform, just to legislation that picks winners and losers in the private sector."
