Shortly before Gregg was tapped, there was plenty of buzz inside the Beltway and in Silicon Valley about Symantec CEO John Thompson's candidacy for the job that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson also turned down. Thompson told Tech Daily Dose on Inauguration Day that, if chosen, he would be honored to serve in the new administration. It is unclear whether the high-tech executive is back in the running or if he would still want the position after being edged out by the senator.
