NewEconomyPatents.org Launched

April 26, 2008

Advocates of continued protection for business process patents last week launched NewEconomyPatents.org. The informational Web site debuted three weeks before an appeals court hearing that stakeholders say could lead to a precedent-setting decision on what types of innovation can be patented in the future. The site provides resources on the business process patent debate including: a history of the case at hand, which involves a battle between inventor Bernard Bilski and the Patent and Trademark Office; a fact sheet; news articles; court filings; patent legislation; and other relevant information. The case will be heard May 8 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

The site is backed by global management consulting firm Accenture. The company's intellectual property chief Wayne Sobon warned in a press release that: "The new global economy is driven by services and information, and America is leading it. But efforts to curtail business process patenting threaten to undermine that leadership position."
