            <title>Free Broadband For All In India?</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p>India may be considering providing free high-speed broadband access by 2009 to all residents, according to news reports. Two pieces from the Indiatimes are offering their two-cents worth on the possible plan. </p>

<p>First, an <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Broadband_to_go_free_in_2_yrs/articleshow/1955351.cms">editorial</a> in the Indiatimes writes that "government’s reported proposal to provide free broadband access is a good idea" and would enhance economic activity and boost productivity.” However, it must "simultaneously speed-up 3G rollout and facilitate convergence, enabling telecom companies to provide value-added services to make up for the loss of conventional Internet and voice business ..."</p>

<p>A separate <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Broadband_to_go_free_in_2_yrs/articleshow/1955351.cms">column</a> from the news source warns that "the move holds the potential to kill the telecom business as we know it." -- <em>Winter Casey</em></p>]]></description>
